Looks like the user tags will switch to whatever journaling system you're posting in, which is good if people have the same user names on different platforms, but could cause confusion. I don't have time to check all these - all user and community names only confirmed as correct for lj. (Also, will get some icons uploaded this weekend.)

[info]mecurtin links to and discusses a disturbing article about "sundown towns" (towns where black people are expected to leave by sundown, meaning they can work there, but not live there).

[info]jonquil puts into words something I've been struggling to say through the last few rounds of sexism and racism debates: It's not who you are, it's what you do - The constant defense of "But I'm not a racist/sexist" is irrelevant. People who are not consciously and actively racist or sexist can still contribute to discrimination and bias against people of color or women. All the focus on whether or not someone is a racist or a sexist detracts from the real point at hand, which is whether her/his words or deeds had racist or sexist results.

It's International Blog Against Racism Week - related posts are being gathered in an IBAR del.icio.us account - I highly recommend reading all of these.

The customer service thing is huge for me - I think lj has shown blatant disregard for its customer base and I don't want to do business with a company that can't offer decent customer service.

Also, I dislike uncertainty, and vague, constantly changing rules. I'm willing to abide by whatever rules lj chooses to set up, so long as they explain those rules clearly and don't keep changing them and acting on those changes without warning. fBut at this point I have no faith that they won't decide to interpret their deliberately vague TOS a different way tomorrow and delete another category of journals that had previously seemed perfectly fine (remember the debacle of using breastfeeding icons as default icons? who could have predicted that?).

I don't think lj is engaged in a witch-hunt or deliberately targetting fannish journals, but I don't think that *anyone* at lj has a clear idea of what is permissible under the TOS. In any situation the way the rules are enforced will be entirely based on one employee's (or a small group of employees') opinions of the law and lj's rules. And it appears that warnings may or may not be given and appeals may or may not be possible. In other words, they can decide that something you posted violates the rules at any time and without warning delete your journal. I'm. . .not ok with that.
